The Hindu scriptures are agog with reference the holiness of Cows. Among the many precious gifts to humanity that was churned out during the great Krshirsagar Manthan or the churning of the ocean of milk, Kamadhenu, the first cow was one of them. Kamadhenu is depicted with all the 33 crore Gods in her stomach. This goes to suggest that she is revered as the mother of all Gods.
From the cow's milk come many treats to the palate like milk, cream, cheese, butter and ghee. All these are considered excellent for health in limited quantities according to the precepts of Ayurveda.
To a Hindu, a cow is an object of utter reverence and is always seen outside any temple. To feed a cow is written as one of the better deeds of human life in order to attain the heights of heaven.
Kamadhenu was the mother not only of the Gods but also the cows of the world. Indian scriptures have given animals their due place of respect. This is seen even today when one sees people touching a cow's stomach and folding their hands with reverence.
This beautiful painting with relief horns and soft spoken eyes is a pride of any devout home.
