|| Mamallapuram, earlier known as Mahabalipuram was the second capital and sea port of the Pallava kings of Kanchipuram during the 5th and 8th century A. D. Famous for its monolithic sculptures and temples that have stood the test of time and ravages of varying climatic conditions, Mamallapuram stands as a striking example of its unique stone known as its namesake. ||

|| Today Mamallapuram has achieved the unique distinction of starting a college of sculpture to keep this dying art of stone sculpting alive. Through the streets of this tiny town, approximately 200 sculptors and master craftsmen are silently at work, molding and chiseling a boulder of dead looking rock
into a fascinating array of life like sculptures. What is perhaps of greater interest is the fact that many of these sculptors creating deities from the Hindu pantheon are Muslims. But the work that is carved from their hands would make the most devout Hindus bend their heads in reverence.||

|| Large and small statues of Lord Ganesh, Lord Krishna, Goddess Durga and a host of deities from the Hindu tradition spring to life from this beautiful stone. ||

|| SACRED ART has managed to get in touch with award winning sculptors to procure some of the breath taking works in stone sculpting. Influences of the Buddhist culture are also seen in this art with Buddha shown in different aspects of his noteworthy life.||
