DURGA STYLE
OR
DRISHTI GANESH (Tanjavur)
Durga, or a manifestation of Parvati, Lord Shiva's
divine consort, was an answer to the prayers of the Devas
(celestial beings in heaven) to come down and kill a terrible
Asura (demon). Indian mythology is full of references
to woman power being the only solace where manly or even Godly
strength has failed.
Ganesh or Ganapati is the favourite son of Parvati
and Lord Shiva. In this detailed and beautiful
bronze sculpture/painting, He is shown in the form akin to
Goddess Durga with eight hands, each holding an awesome
weapon of destruction gifted by the various Gods and the ferocious
vehicle, the Lion to boot.
